Selective suppression of Protein Kinase C Isozymes

Sometimes medical discoveries are found through deductive reasoning.  A great example of this is Protein Kinase C.

Protein Kinase C isozyme appears in hair follicle cells that are in the telogen phase, but are not present in the anagen phase.  If this isozyme is present only in the resting phase but not the growth phase, its presence may signal pathways that shift hair from growth to resting.

When Procyanadin B-2, a selective protein kinase-C inhibitor, was applied topically there was not only significant hair growth results, but also an increase in the anagen:telogen ratios, indicative that this agent is highly effective at suppressing this isozyme and improving the amount of hairs in the growth phase.
